The Skinny on Thin Fonts
Today let’s talk about very thin sans serif fonts, like the ones shown below. They are usually denoted by a thin, narrow, or light label. For instance, Raleway – Thin.
I like these weights of fonts because they feel light, clean and crisp. They work well when contrasted with thicker font weights, like regular or bold and give design projects a fresh and open look.
Thin fonts come with these caveats: 1) overall they don’t work as well at smaller sizes, 2) in print pieces, if the font size is too small it can be too thin to print. So keep those things in mind.
The following fonts are free for commercial use via FontSquirrel. There are also many, many thin or light weight fonts you can purchase from places like MyFonts.
Now go have some fun with your new font friends Raleway, Lane, Josefin, Existence and Disco.

I’ve been sitting around waiting for a blog post fairy to shine her light down on me and give me a bunch of freaking awesome posts.
October, November, December, January and February went by and she didn’t come. She saw my lack of effort and responded accordingly.
I don’t know how it works for you, but my fairy demands ACTION. She wants to know that I want something bad enough to try to get it on my own, without her help.
Even if I really suck. Even if I’m not perfect.
In the end it was fear that motivated me.
I was afraid that if I kept waiting for the world’s best blog post to magically appear, that I’d never write anything. That my blog would stay silent.
So, I challenged myself to write 23 blog posts in March (this is #12) and I shared my goal with someone who knows a lot about pushing others to reach their goals, my friend Jenn Morgan.
On March 1st, Jenn checked in with me.
“I have a few good starts,” I said. “If I can just get out of my way enough to do it.”
That’s exactly what all the good blog fairies are hoping for. They want us to get out of our own way and do the things we really want to do.
Then they can throw in the magic when we aren’t even looking.

Last week I lost my Great Aunt Sarahmae. She gave the best hugs in the world and loved Louis L’Amour. She carried the Olympic Torch when she was 80 years old, made awesome doughnuts and had words of encouragement for everyone she met.
I am so sad to lose another member of this generation of my family. My grandparents are all gone and my great aunts and uncles take with them little bits of history that I can’t get back.
They knew my grandparents and parents when they were young. They know who they were before my siblings and I came along.
My grandparents and their brothers and sisters kept things close to their hearts. They didn’t have Facebook or Twitter to share every detail of their day with the world. They had secrets and heartaches that I could infer only from offhand remarks and conversations. They didn’t feel the need to talk about sad things. They kept on keeping on.
I find their lives fascinating. The hows and whys that moved them across the U.S. and back. I am amazed by their resolve. I am amazed by their ability to keep moving forward. I am amazed by their ability to give.
For more than 94 years Aunt Sarahmae focused on comforting and encouraging everyone who crossed her path. She did so with a smile and a hug and unconditional love that will be with me always. She’s a hard act to follow.
